What Autoimmune Disease Looks Like

When Your Body Is Fighting Itself

Autoimmune conditions happen when the immune system mistakenly targets the body's own tissue. There are more than 80 recognized autoimmune diseases, from Hashimoto's thyroiditis to rheumatoid arthritis to lupus, and symptoms often overlap, flare unpredictably, and take years to properly diagnose.

Because symptoms are so wide-ranging — fatigue, joint pain, skin changes, digestive issues, brain fog — many patients see several providers before anyone connects the dots. A thorough antibody and inflammatory panel is often the missing piece.

Abbott Health & Wellness runs comprehensive lab testing to identify autoimmune patterns early, and coordinates with specialists when a condition requires care beyond primary care, such as rheumatology.

Autoimmune Disease Can Cause

Persistent fatigue that doesn't improve with rest
Joint pain, stiffness, or swelling
Skin rashes or changes
Digestive symptoms without a clear cause
Symptoms that flare, then improve, then flare again
Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
How We Approach It

Testing First, Then a Plan — With Specialists When Needed

We run comprehensive antibody and inflammatory marker panels to look for patterns consistent with autoimmune activity. Some conditions, like Hashimoto's thyroiditis, are managed directly here. Others are identified early and referred to the right specialist, with your primary care and labs already in hand.

Physician Insight

"Autoimmune symptoms are often dismissed for years because they don't fit neatly into one category. My job is to actually look — run the right panel, take the pattern seriously, and get you to the right next step, whether that's care here or a specialist referral."

Autoimmune Disease FAQs

What patients ask most before their first appointment.

Early signs are often nonspecific: persistent fatigue, joint pain or stiffness, skin changes, digestive symptoms, or low-grade fevers that come and go. Because these overlap with many other conditions, lab testing is usually needed to identify an autoimmune pattern.
Diagnosis typically involves antibody testing (such as ANA, thyroid antibodies, or condition-specific markers), inflammatory markers, and a review of your symptom history. Some conditions require additional specialist evaluation to confirm a diagnosis.
We directly manage some autoimmune conditions, particularly Hashimoto's thyroiditis, within primary and functional medicine care. For more complex autoimmune diseases, we run the initial workup and coordinate referral to the appropriate specialist, such as a rheumatologist.
